Considering how he has an extremely thick Italian accent, it should go without saying that Italian is more than likely Mario's mother tongue. Not to mention that the few times he has spoken English, they're mostly short quotes, stock phrases and the like which, outside of adding some effect to certain situations (like the Terminator's "Hasta la Vista, baby"), they don't really have much significance. It is fun nonetheless and a challenge for the hard core mario fans."

Super Mario Bros. 2 (the original) was only released in Japan, and was very similar to SMB but with harder levels. The SMB 2 that was released in North America was a modified version of Doki Doki Panic with Mario characters thrown in. This version was released as 'The Lost Levels' on future compilation packs and Wii Virtual Console."
