Jules Verne meets Leiji Matsumoto in a two-part 1995 OAV that was clearly intended to be much longer. At the end of World War II, the Japanese battle sub Ra met the Liberty, its American counterpart. Both were powered by a mysterious energy source, and each carried a monitor from a highly advanced race from beneath the Earth's crust.

Both were powered by a mysterious energy source, and each carried a monitor from a highly advanced race from beneath the Earth's crust. Fifty years later, the Subterraneans attack, and humanity's only hope is the reconstructed Ra. The battle involving the Subterraneans, the useless U.N. fleet, and the Ra is played against a slushy romance between Go, the grandson of the Ra's original commander, and Annette, the kindly Subterranean. The story simply stops with the Ra heading for the subterranean realm to try to establish relations. The admiring depiction of the Japanese Imperial Navy during the war may offend some American viewers. Rated 15 Up: Violence, brief nudity, minor profanity. --Charles Solomon
