But they soon realize that Kainan is a brave warrior and make him an honorary member of their people, little realizing Kainan has accidentally brought with him, from across the stars, a monster that is decimating the local Viking population. If that story sounds complex enough, co-director and co-writer Howard McCain (working with Dirk Blackman) offer another twist that makes it impossible not to sympathize with Kainan's monster. Pulled in different directions, a viewer can't find a way into this overly complicated tale. By the time an over-the-top climax hits the screen, it's easy to get bored. Still, there are some admirable elements, especially a cast including Sophia Myles as a spunky princess and Ron Perlman as a rival Viking king one wouldn't want to mess with. --Tom Keogh...
