As Gundam Seed (2002) continues, the Earth Alliance ship Archangel lands in the North African desert; Kira has to reconfigure the Gundam Strike to operate under gravity and in sand (not an easy trick, given its weight). His Coordinator powers enable him to do the programming in time to destroy the Zaft BuCues, cat-like mecha that resemble Zoids, with some help from the resistance movement Desert Dawn. The BuCue attack was mounted by Zaft leader Andrew Waltfeld, "The Desert Tiger." Like Treize Khushrenada in Gundam Wing, Waltfeld believes in the nobility of the warrior's calling: he captures Kira, then allows him to leave because he's such a worthy foe. The rivalry between Kira and Athrun takes a backseat to the emotional storms caused by the scheming Flay, and by Cagalli, a girl who's apparently never forgiven Kira for rescuing her earlier in the series.
