There are many things that a person can take from this film other than the inspiration for a Travelocity commercial. From the very first shot of the film it’s clear that it’s not going to be just another film. Often labeled as artsy-fartsy, or pretentious, Amelie is one of the most original movies, especially considering that at it’s core it’s just a simple love story. Love stories are the... read more
I really do not understand what the whole fuss is about, regarding this film. It's a sappy story if there is one, it's certainly not the most beautiful film out there (yes, the photography is good [hence my 1 full star of 2 points]), but Audrey Tautou has *no personality whatsoever*. Her acting in every single film is the same, she has but two expressions to her face. As for this movie, its meani... read more

A painfully shy waitress working at a tiny Paris cafe, Amélie makes a surprising discovery and sees her life drastically changed for the better! From then on, Amélie dedicates herself to helping others find happiness ... in the most delightfully unexpected way! But will she have the courage to do for herself what she has done for others?
Perhaps the most charming movie of all time, Amélie is certainly one of the top 10. The title character (the bashful and impish Audrey Tautou) is a single waitress who decides to help other lonely people fix their lives. Her widowed father yearns to travel but won't, so to inspire the old man she sends his garden gnome on a tour of the world; with whispered gossip, she brings together two cranky regulars at her café; she reverses the doorknobs and reprograms the speed dial of a grocer who's mean to his assistant. Gradually she realizes her own life needs fixing, and a chance meeting leads to her most elaborate stratagem of all. This is a deeply wonderful movie, an illuminating mix of magic and pragmatism. Fans of the director's previous films (Delicatessen, The City of Lost Children) will not be disappointed; newcomers will be delighted. --Bret Fetzer
“There are many things that a person can take from this film other than the inspiration for a Travelocity commercial. From the very first shot of the film it’s clear that it’s not going to be just another film. Often labeled as artsy-fartsy, or pretentious, Amelie is one of the most original movies, especially considering that at it’s core it’s just a simple love story. Love stories are the oldest, and at this point maybe one of the most unwelcome, concepts in film. Amelie is different, however, by adding such an impressive amount of depth, and wit to it, you’ll forget that what the movie is really about; you won’t care either, you’ll just be enjoying it.
Something I wanted to take a moment to talk about, though, is the opening credits. Showing Amelie as a little gir” read more

Her acting in every single film is the same, she has but two expressions to her face. As for this movie, its meaning is lost on me. Jeunet's film City of Lost Children had more meaning, consistency and character than this film, which has zero value. (Amelie, or rather The Fabulous Destiny of Amelie Poulain as its original title was, is definitely not coming in my movie collection.) It was a waste of time, and all 8 of us watching this together when it came out on dvd actually voted to fast-forward the movie a” read more
“A quirky, uplifting, sepia-toned story of a young woman's quest to spread happiness and, quite possibly, find her true love. It sounds sappy, and it is, but it's so darned inventive and full of joie de vivre that you can't help but love it. And it certainly doesn't hurt that there are no shortage of wide-angle lensed close-ups of the beautiful Audrey Tautou.
A great story, beautiful cinematography, fine acting, and a perfect soundtrack = 10/10. This is one to own.
And be sure to check out these other movies by this director, Jean-Pierre Jeunet: Delicatessen, City of Lost Children, and A Very Long Engagement (also starring Audrey Tautou).” read more
