In 2008, Cole became a judge on the British reality television show The X Factor. Cole has been called "the nation's new sweetheart."Her first solo single, "Fight for This Love", was the fastest-selling single of 2009 up to that point when it entered the UK Singles Chart and Irish Singles Chart at number one, becoming the fourth best-seller of the year. Her debut solo album 3 Words achieved similar success. Cole's second solo album, scheduled for a November 2010 release date, will be titled Messy Little Raindrops; the first single from the album will be "Promise This", followed by "The Flood".

Cheryl Cole first stepped away from Girls Aloud in 2008 when she featured as a vocalist on will.i.am's "Heartbreaker". Debut solo album, 3 Words, was released by Fascination Records in the United Kingdom in October 2009. will.i.am produced the a majority of the album and also provided vocals for many of the tracks. The album debuted on the UK Album Chart at number one and was certified platinum by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) the following month. The album peaked at number two in Ireland and relatively lowly across the rest of Europe. The first single from the album, "Fight for This Love", debuted at number one on the UK Singles Chart and became the fourth fastest-selling single of 2009 in the UK up to that point. It also topped the Irish, Danish and Norwegian charts and peaked within the top five across most of Europe. Cole's follow-up singles, "3 Words", featuring will.i.am and Parachute peaked in the top five in UK and the top ten in Ireland.
