My thoughts

A beautifully written book that's both moving and bittersweet. Hosseini shows the reader how the Soviet occupation, the tribal conflicts and the Taliban rule of Afghanistan affected the people on a daily level through the lives of Mariam and Laila.

If you want to know what it is like to be a woman in Afghanistan, this is the book to read. If you wonder whether what the NATO troops are doing over there (keeping the Taliban out), I highly recommend this book as background.

It's a great story in and of itself.

"March/maaliskuu Hyvin samantyylinen rakenteeltaan kuin Ja vuoret kaikuivat. Tässäkin useamman ihmisen tarinat kietoutuvat yhteen Afganistanissa halki kuluneiden vuosikymmenten. Vaikka naisten aseman järkyttävyys isketään naamalle lailla kermakakun, mustavalkoisuuteen ei lähdetä ja hyviäkin miehiä kävelee sivuilla vastaan."
