I am a fan of this book. The use of language is what makes this a great book rather than the story although I was invovled in then story and with all of the characters. Unlike some others I didn't have a problem with the final section with the mother, in fact I quite liked that!

Not for me

I have given higher ratings to books that are less deserving in literary terms. This is undoubtedly the work of a clever writer. It was special enough to be short-listed for the Booker Prize in 2005. I read it from front to back, but I just couldn't warm to it.
