Storm Front (The Dresden Files, Book 1) review

Storm Front is the first book of the Dresden Files; the Dresden Files is apparently also a television show. (One that I haven’t seen, so can’t really say anything about.) Harry Dresden is not your average PI - he’s a wizard. A wizard down on his luck. It’s hard to make a living when people don’t believe that magic is real. Thankfully, working as a consultant for the police helps. When called upon by the police this time, however, Dresden is faced with a set of magical murders that even he can’t fathom how they were accomplished, and is quickly getting in over his head. Not only does the murderer realize that Harry is onto him, but the White Council believes that Harry is the one behind the murders. Harry needs to figure out the real culprit, and fast, before he becomes the next victim.

I really liked the narration of this novel. It was definitely different for a fantasy novel - felt more like those black and white clips from movies where you see with the detective sitting in his office behind his desk narrating than it did a novel. This certainly helped to draw me in right from the beginning.

Overall, the book was the perfect summer read - light, fluffy and rather predictable. In a good way, of course.

What I liked best about this book is that, while the first book in a series, it feels like a standalone. So, while I enjoyed it, I don’t feel the pressing need to read the next one in the series. It’s a nice change. And, while I will probably pick up the next one in the series at some point in time, I don’t need to do it right this very second.
