Gone With the Wind is everything that you’ve heard that it is – a flawed epic, a masterpiece, the greatest selling novel of all time. Margaret Mitchell’s mythologizing of the “Old South” – the last days, the death, the reconstruction, the birth of the “New South” – is a great piece of literature deserving of everything that has been written about it, flaws and all. My biggest problems with the novel occur during the same section: the reconstruction. Once Scarlet is on husband number two, the problems with the novel start flying fast and quick. The Klu Klux Klan becomes a contradictory presence – both hated and beloved by the characters, sometimes the same characters, who can’t keep their opinions straight.
