This is the start of an absolutely huge story, spanning 7 books, 30 years worth of writing and over 3000 pages of work. Steven King started this book at the age of 19 deciding that in his life he wanted to create something better than The Lord of the Rings, something that would be epic, something that would be big. He certainly achieved this, the story starts off in this book as kind of setting the scene, introducing you to the main character Roland of Gilead and giving you insight into what kind of man he is and what he is doing. I found this one a bit harder to read than the others but it is definitely a good book and worth reading through as once you reach books 2 and 3 you will be sold on the series for good. The rest of the books are considerably bigger than the first, but i found myself hooked to the series and read the first 4 in about 2 and a half weeks. You are lucky enough now to have the series already released, it is even being being made into a film/tv series, but when i read this the last 2 books were not out yet and thus i had to wait. Which was difficult to say the least! Once you start this series you will want to finish it, and once you do you will feel like you have come a hell of a long way since reading this book. I hope many people read this so it gains the recognition it deserves and that Steven King gets the kudos he deserves for giving it to us. You will not be disappointed if you read this!
