A young sailer is accused of a crime he didn't commit and is sentenced to jail. During his imprisonment, a fellow prisoner gives him a comprehensive education and finally bequeaths him a hidden treasure. Years later, a gentleman arrives in Parisian society and plots the downfall of all those who betrayed a poor young sailor many years ago...

A very good story that has been retold or copied so many times that it may sound cliched but this is still the original and the best.
