An Anglo-Saxon Masterpiece

3 years, 9 months ago at Dec 31 1:42
BEOWULF is a fantastic poem and Heaney's translation is superb. The language is elegant, though not unwieldy, and the narrative is exhilarating, filled with perilous creatures and mortal combat. I recommend it to anyone interested in fantasy, poetry, or Anglo-Saxon culture. Few tales have been more influential to English literature than this one.

Tolkien (61 books items)

"First Publication: February 2001 (this edition) Published by: W.W. Norton & Company Obviously, this work is much older than the edition I list here. The Seamus Heaney translation of it is worth a read. While not quite as "accurate" or true as a few other translations, it does capture the feel of the work quite well, and this particular edition includes side-by-side of the translation and original text. I wouldn't shy away from some other translations of the work, but you could do far worse than"

Imaginary Places to Visit -- A Wishlist (9 books items)

"Heorot The mead hall of Hrothgar in the epic poem Beowulf, it is legendary for its rugged magnificence, the epitome of the heroic age. It is also the site of Grendel's attacks and the triumph of Beowulf over Grendel. Being one of my favorite epics, visiting the center of the tale would be high up on my list of places to see, if it were possible anyway."

10 Horrifying Monsters in Literature (10 books items)

"Grendel The first of three major villains in the anonymous epic poem. He is described as a descendant of Cain, the world’s first murderer, whose lineage God cursed with atrocious physical deformities. Grendel is never physically described in the poem except to say that he is a horrific creature, “very terrible to look upon.” He becomes enraged, probably by the people’s loud carousing every night in the mead hall of Heorot, and proceeds to break in during the festivities one night and de"
