About: He was born Alan Wolf Arkin on March 26, 1934, in Brooklyn, New York, into a family of Jewish intellectuals from Russia and Germany. In 1946 the Arkins moved from Brooklyn to Los Angeles, California. His father, David Arkin, was an artist and writer, who worked as a teacher, and lost his job for merely refusing to answer questions about his political affiliation during the 1950s Red Scare. His father challenged the politically biased dismissal and eventually prevailed, but unfortunately it was a ... (more)

"Well-aged gentlemen are always some of my favorites. Alan was good in Little Miss Sunshine but I absolutely loved him in Aviator! It is said that he makes delicious gravy, too. Mmmm. 10/10"

My Favorite Under-Appreciated Actors (20 person items)

"Alan Arkin has appeared in around 70 movies. This guy doesn't even understand the word 'retire.' For his role of Captain Yossarian in Catch-22 he should have been knighted (or the American equivalent). A consummate professional, Alan Arkin doesn't need to ham up his roles to get attention. He gives exactly what is needed, and for that, he deserves mad respect. "

The Most Commonly Typecast Actors (13 person items)

" Okay... Alan Arkin wasn't too typecast back in the day, when they gave him roles in "The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming" and "Wait Until Dark." He was versatile then. But then Little Miss Sunshine came out, he won an award, and things got bland. I'll give him credit, he's never made a bad movie (that I've seen.) But now everyone wants him to play the 'crotchety old guy with a secret good side.' He was quite funny in "Marley & Me" and he played off Owen well, but "Sunshine"
